Published in 2010, a study conducted between MIT and Union College demonstrated that collective intelligence exceeds cognitive abilities of individual group members. The principle also applies to medicine. The process of decision making is nowadays influenced by the continuous flux of information, the evolution of the technology, and the development of new protocols and evidence-based procedures. But the most powerful tool that we have available is communication with other specialists.
Those cases that fall into the “grey zone” and for which no individual approach offers optimal esthetic and functional results, compel us to integrate other specialists in our treatment planning. Among them, ortho- prosthetics collaboration plays a special role, due both to the complex facetes it carries and to the time factor. A well conducted, individualized orthodontic treatment may turn a difficult- in a medium difficulty-grade case, and one that requires great sacrifice of dental or periodontal tissues into a minimally invasive approach.
That is why it’s important for us to recognize the complex problems our patients may have, our own limits in addressing those issues, to individualize protocols and find the common ground to efficiently communicate.

Dr Elia Diana Boangar graduated the “I. Hatieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca in 2006, and in 2010 she finished her Master’s degree in Orthodontics in Cluj-Napoca and Bordeaux, France.
Ever since, she has been exclusively practicing orthodontics in Cluj-Napoca and Zalau.
In 2015 she became part of the “Learning by Doing” multidisciplinary educational platform, which advocates for solid professional and ethical principles in dentistry.
Apart from her private practice, she likes to share her experience and emphasise for the integration of interdisciplinary in the protocols of complex treatment planning.
She lectures nationally and internationally on the subjects of treatment planning and execution, skeletal anchorage and interdisciplinary treatment, emphasising the importance of properly sequencing orthodontic, periodontal and restorative treatment.
She also published articles related to interdisciplinary orthodontics in international peer-reviewed journals. She is an active member of World Federation of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists and European Orthodontic Society.
