Although lingual orthodontics has been available for nearly 40 years, it has gone in and out of fashion. The concept is attributed to Craven Kurz, an Assistant Professor of Occlusion and Gnathology at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) School of Dentistry and Dr Kinya Fujita of Kanagawa University in Japan, in the 1970s. The advent of aesthetic appliances and some biomechanical difficulties led to many practitioners reverting to labial systems. In the 21st century, new lingual systems with improved biomechanics and rising patient demand has meant that lingual orthodontics is booming. This has led to the birth of BLOS, home of lingual orthodontics in the UK, BLOS is open to Orthodontics Specialists and Specialists in training worldwide.
